Maybe.Maybe the above takes all the fun out of the initial "ON" where we all look to see if the magic smoke stays in the box or escapes to freedom

comes from a time when hobbyists had a whole lot more common sense and used the same techniques used by the TV Repairman (anyone remember them ? They were from a pre "throw everything in the garbage and buy new " society.).
I have had similiar on my bench since the age of 16 or so and this little "light bulb" has saved no end of grief over the years.Simple and smart="a good thing" as Martha would say before she went to prison

I've talked to several people that use this type of setup and swear by it. I think I'd rather have an isolation transformer and a variac though, to limit everything.

LOL .... I did that last night after I built the STEPS for my millett
