Ok folks, time for me to unleash some eclectic suggestion of music other than just Diana Krall.
Most are truly aural sex.
Jazz vocals:
- Eva Cassidy. Liquid beauty unsurpassed by any modern female jazz singer. This music is touching, haunting and tragic. Pick up as much Eva as you can find.
- Patricia Barber: modern cool, among others. She has a sultry voice, and usually quite mellow.
- Holly Cole: Piano, bass, drums, and mmmm Holly. Lovely singer.
Guess what? Like Diana Krall, they are all CANADIANS.
- Check out cut #10 from love scenes called “My love is” finger snaps opening reminiscent of “fever”
- Jane Monheit: a youngster that is growing rapidly. She is improving with age.
Mighty Sam Mclaine: Blues for the soul. ETC. Some of the best blues/soul vocals ever recorded. Sam will make your spirit soar. This is the audio equivalent of soul food!
Strings:
- Micheal Bromek: celtic guitar- lovely close-mic’ed acoustic guitar
- Nickle Creek: self titled album. GREAT strings.
- Cello: Jacqueline Du Pre or Janos Starker. Jaquelin will have some cello fans saying yo-yo who?
- John Williams: Guitar recital. 1957/ MONO. Yes, it’s on cee dee too. Stunning performance and topnotch imaging. Shows you what a single mic can do.
-Yngvie J. Malmsteen- collection. Rising force, riot in the dungeon… this guy is the Eddie Van Halen of Sweden.
- Check out the utterly dazzling skills of Bearing Strait. They play strings like the best down home bluegrass or country artists we have, and then some. Unbelievably talented RUSSIANS.
Drums:
- Dave Weckyl- Master Plan. Killer chops, but a bright recording in parts.
- Dream Theater: live at the marquis or Images and Words. Mike Portnoy is a modern era Neil Peart
- Burning for Buddy vol I: Neil Peart of Rush and a lot of modern drummers pay tribute to the late master Buddy Rich by performing his music. I bet you never knew Kenny Aronoff could BURN like this!
- Steve Smith/Vital Information: some painfully great drum work here. Steve is a master of jazz and rock drumming.
- McCoy Tyner: power trios
- Jack Dejohnette: nice dark, melodic drumming very consistent and funky
- Best of Tony Williams… early power jazz/fusion. I can hear those cs black dot heads as he hammers the crap out of them in a way that might bruise you.
Horns:
- Best of Sonny Rollins. Some mono, great imaging and smoky sax sound
- Best of empire brass
- Best of Canadian brass
