What do you mean with EAX on X-Fi?

EAX is a standard. X-fi supports revision 5. Do you mean asking if people like EAX 5 better then EAX 4 or do we like EAX in general?

EAX is the essential part of any game that was coded to take advantage of it. Sound is flat when you turn it off, some sounds are missing.

EAX is Creative's standard for 3D positional audio (they made it). It just so happens that many software developers have included support for it.

Anyway, I prefer EAX in my games and not much else. Sometimes I'll use some of the effects to jack with people in Vent/TS.

Not true.

EAX doesn't make 3D sounds, and if you look at its name its pretty obvious (Environmental Audio Extensions).

EAX adds premade 'sound effects' to the 3D area where the 3D positioning is done by the DirectSound3D and OpenAL drivers, think of effects like strong reverb when you are in a cave.

The only thing which is added in newer EAX versions is more Area's (Cave, hallway, forrest, etc) and more simultaneous sounds, where EAX 2.0 can process 32 sounds at once, EAX 5.0 (X-Fi) can do 128 sounds.

Well, I wouldn't call them premade, the dsp does calculate them on the fly.

I didn't say EAX makes 3D sounds. I said it is a standard for 3D positional audio, which it is. Where is the fault in that statement?

The effects are premade, when programming a area in a game, you'll have to give the area a EAX tag, like "CAVE". Then the DSP does the needed processing.
It isn't open, so developers cannot make new Area's, they will have to use the ones Creative already pre-made.

It has nothing to do with 3D positional audio, it is a standard for Digital Sound Processing.
DirectSound3D, OpenAL, A3D (which also was the competitor of EAX 1.0, and was clearly better, as it did both 3D positioning and reverb processing) and Dolby Digital are standards for 3D positional audio.

So it would seem. I stand corrected, for now. The info is appreciated.

Hmmm. But doesn't it have variable reverb effects anyway. The chip is perfectly capable of them and the emu 0404 has nice reverb parameters and it uses the audigy dsp.

AFAIK you cannot edit anything other then the area. The area's can also have different EQ's and pitch's if i remember correctly.

I used to do a little (useless) programming, thats why i'm a bit familiar with EAX.

You there, watch your words mister!

... just joking.

Anyway, i do not think many like EAX processing in their hi-end rig. At least i don't, i want to have the music 'bit perfect', and with EAX the results will be rather 'butt perfect' instead.

If you do not like the sound you get with music, you should rather be looking for different music, or invest in a better rig.

lol... yeah I like to set mine to the preset "Dizzy Drunken Stumbling Around With A Hangover In A Cave"... that's how I listen to all my music

seriously though, I don't have any effects or even tone controls, and gain set to 0dB (100%), use ASIO or kernel-streaming where possible...

EAX is for games, not music...
