Earbuds with Volume Control

I've been using the same Sony earbuds for the past 15-20 years; they finally broke the other day. They had a cool volume slider on the cable. It didn't work like modern headphone volume control, where there's a +/- button that controls the phone's volume. The slider increased the volume even when the device volume was maxed out. I say "device" because there weren't smartphones around when I bought these earbuds.

Are headphones still made like this? All the newer ones I've seen seem to employ the new technology that taps into the phone's volume control.. instead of having a volume boost like I described above.
