knowing full well the risk of ear damage due to high volume I was wondering how many headfiers give their ears a rest for one or two days.
I know its difficult to wean oneself away from your headphone but when I return after a rest everything just souunds better.

do you think this is psychological or is it a sign that ears need relief now and then?

I get tinnitis very badly when listening to headphones for too long. Usually I switch over to my speakers for a few days and listen at lower levels and you'd be surprised how much less it hurts.

I think ears need resting once in a while... If you get tinnitus or any other problem I think you should stay away from your phones for a day or so... If you can't stand the thought of parting with your phones you could listen at very moderate listening volumes. If my ears are ringing after a long day of listening I try to take a break the day after, just to make sure that nothing bad happens to my precious ears. I always try to keep the volume levels down, and if you're a bit careful you'll be perfectly alright!

A few weeks ago I heard a ringing sound in my left ear for a few days, and I was completely devastated, thinking that I had screwed my hearing up for good... Luckily, the sound has disappeared by now, and I feel very relieved, but I've also realized that you shall NEVER ignore the warning signs of your body.

Be careful, but enjoy your music, accidents happen, so don't blame yourself if anything goes wrong, it's probably just a temporary problem. Use common sense, but don't worry too much, that would only make you unhappy!
