Actually, I do believe that is an old wives' tale. I think it's just a function of age -- I certainly have gotten to the point where I need to explicitly trim my ear hairs.

I am considering a wax treatment. Just like (some) girls get on their legs.

Get electrolysis. After one or two sessions, the hairs will be gone for good.

Dusty is correct. Hair does not grow back thicker because it's shaved. Any hair that's actually sprouted from your skin is already dead, so cutting it has no effect on the follicle.

Go ahead and trim that ear hair.

The myth that cut hair grows back thicker does have some truth to it. No, there aren't more hairs growing in but two things do happen which gives the appearance of thicker hair. First, virgin (never before cut) hair, is tapered at the end. When it's chopped off, the ends are all as thick as the rest of the hair giving it a thicker appearance. Second, uncut hair is different lengths but when they are all trimmed to the same length it also gives the appearance of thicker hair.

There might an imbalance in your body system.

Last month I met a girl who actually had a mustache. I’ve read that it’s a sign of some type of body imbalance.
