In anticipation of my ipod, I've been ripping all of my cds using eac/lame. The odd thing about EAC is though, secure mode operates at 14x or so for the first track or three, but then in the later tracks it slows down to 3.2x every time. Any ideas on what's going on? Should read times be faster as it gets to the end of the disc?

14, as in FOURTEEN X? My average is 2.x, and I have a newer (40x) CD-RW drive. It's a pile of horse manure, though..

yup, 14x on the first track or two.

Its ripping at 3.2 now :-/

Did you press "F4" to detect gaps before you begin ripping the cd? I always do that otherwise on my TDK burner it slows down considerably.

Also, there are like 3 different modes for detecting gaps isn't there. maybe try all 3 to see which one is the fastest.
