Will I notice a huge difference if I buy a portable amplifiier for my shure e5c (currently driven by the internal ipod amp)? I'm considering the purchase of the Portaphile V2^2 maxxed to further increase the lows and highs of the headphones. I want to know from those of you that have tried amplifying the e5c's if it is worth buying the amplifier or if the difference will be insignificant.

The E5's out of an ipod are not bad, however, throw in an amp and they definitely move to another level. I use a Hornet and there is a huge difference in sq. I've never heard the Portaphile but would bet that there would also be a large difference from running the E5 straight from the ipod's headphone out. Pick up the Portaphile and give it a try. If you don't find a big enough difference to justify the expense, you can sell and not lose too much.

I've never heard a Portaphile so I can't comment.
