Never have been one to wear a band over top of my head to listen to music. That's limited me to canalphones, of which Shure E5s have emerged as Top Dog after multiple purchases and countless comparisons.

First brief impressions of the new E4s suggest I have a crisis

, and it's all GOOD. I'll write more detailed impressions, but holy smoke! Cleaner, deeper bass, WAAY more extended highs, no where near the fatigue factor of the E3s, and no where near the overblown boom of the E5s (which I admit I still like). E4s rule...more to come.

I find the E3's way too "middled" and thus quite fatiguing, especially at higher volume levels. If you've ever compared them with the E5s you'd probably have an idea about it. E5s present a much more balanced sound, with incredible bass.

I know, I know! They are really different animals. I'm working on it, have a weekend getaway planned, but will try to write some impressions before we go...

Sounds great, no rush, I think everyone is excited about the new 'phones!
It'll be interesting though. No doubt.

If you have a chance please compare the E4C and E5C straight out of the Ipod. I currently have an Ipod Mini and E5C. I am very satisfied with the E5 amped, but I always feel they are a bit lacking unamped. I am not a big fan of carrying around amps in my pocket, so I rarely use portable amps.

This is an excellent post, and covers a topic about which I too have keen interest!! I have always maintained that the E5s straight out of iPod sound somewhat veiled and lacking in soundstage. Go line-out and SMV3 and the E5s are unbelievable - straight out of my Rio Carbon - Unbelievable! The low impedance of the E4s may allow for more 'play' at the volume knob and could make a substantial difference. Will be comparing this!

Never heard about the E3 being fatiguing in the sense you mean before though, but now I understand. Fatiguing usually being used to refer to intolerable/harsh treble, certainly not the case for the E3c, made me ask.
