I picked up the Shure E5's yesterday from Guitar Center and figured I should write a little something about my initial impressions.

I've had the Shure E2 for about a month and have really come to enjoy them, but felt that they were missing a bit too much in the trebles to use them for critical listening. In the past I've borrowed an ER4s from Edwood (thanks again) but found them to be a bit to lean in the bass department and very microphonic. Because of these two experiences, I've become very interested in IEM's and was looking for a way to mate the best qualites of the two IEM's that I have heard. Overall I liked the sound signature of the E2 much more than the ER4 and found them to be more comfortable, so I went with the Shure E5.

First things first, the E5's at least to this point are more comfortable in the ear than the Ety, but drastically uncomfortable around the ear due to the goofy memory fit cable. The damn thing is a pain in the neck to deal with while you're trying to fit the tips in your ears and once it's in, it digs into the top and back of your ears... Granted, I wear them to come down my front rather than my back, but the E2 really shouldn't be WAY more comfortable should it? Is it just me? am I doing something wrong, I know I'm not the only one who wears them this way. Don't the custom IEM's have this too? how is this thing supposed to be more comfortable?

Beyond that, I like the cord of the E2 better as well as it's less prone to getting all kinked up... WTH were they thinking?

How do they sound? AWESOME!!! A bit of their thunder was taken by the fact that I just got some M-Audio BX8 powered reference monitors (which sound damn good

), but these things are wonderful! They'll give the HD650's a run for their money... Yes, the HD650's are better, but these also isolate (something rather important to me), aren't hot (I live in SoCal, home of the hot weather, okay you guys in Florida got us beat, but I like Washington State's weather much better), and don't put pressure on the top of your head (something that really annoys me after a while; although they do dig into your ears).

Anyway, so far, their benefits outweight their weaknesses and I'm a pretty happy camper.

Anyone know how I can get past my issues with the memory fit cable?

yes, the memory wire is way too long.

here is what you do:

1) pick at the ends of the memory wires and they will begin to peel off like an orange peel. leave about 1/3 of the original length. you CAN do this with your fingernails, and it will safely remove a majority of the memory wire.

2) there is a little metal wire that runs along the cable beneath the plasitc memory wire. get a nail clipper and cut this to be flush with the remaining wire.

this will make your experience with the e5's about 1000 times better.

do it, now. i promise you will love it.

Just switched to the medium silicon tips... WOW they sound WAY better... Just a recommendation for everybody getting these, try the different tips even if they don't seem like they'll be right, getting the right one makes a huge difference in the sound. They now have much more presence, better highs, better bass... whoa!

As compared to the small silicons or the foamies? A huge difference in sound eh? Damn this is gonna be great. Mine should be here from iDealSound on Wednesday. E5 + HD650 will make me one hell of a happy camper. Now I just need to ditch the roommate and get me some sweet speakers

Yeah, I'm not quite sure what the story is because I'm getting a good seal with the small tips and the foamies... Something about the way the medium tip fits though is making them sound WAY better. Congrats on getting those! Wait, Wednesday? wow! that's tomorrow, you really couldn't wait... hehehe

I think I'm going to start a pool on how long it takes you new E5er's to order custom IEM's (Sensa's or UE's, or, if you're really brave, Westone's)...

I don't think it's gonna happen any time soon, for me anyway. I am mainly going to be using the E5 for the noise blocking capability, I will still use the HD650 when I don't need that. As much as I'd probably enjoy those custom IEM's, I'd much rather save that extra $500+ for some good speakers.
