I picked up the Shure E5's yesterday from Guitar Center and figured I should write a little something about my initial impressions.
I've had the Shure E2 for about a month and have really come to enjoy them, but felt that they were missing a bit too much in the trebles to use them for critical listening. In the past I've borrowed an ER4s from Edwood (thanks again) but found them to be a bit to lean in the bass department and very microphonic. Because of these two experiences, I've become very interested in IEM's and was looking for a way to mate the best qualites of the two IEM's that I have heard. Overall I liked the sound signature of the E2 much more than the ER4 and found them to be more comfortable, so I went with the Shure E5.
First things first, the E5's at least to this point are more comfortable in the ear than the Ety, but drastically uncomfortable around the ear due to the goofy memory fit cable. The damn thing is a pain in the neck to deal with while you're trying to fit the tips in your ears and once it's in, it digs into the top and back of your ears... Granted, I wear them to come down my front rather than my back, but the E2 really shouldn't be WAY more comfortable should it? Is it just me? am I doing something wrong, I know I'm not the only one who wears them this way. Don't the custom IEM's have this too? how is this thing supposed to be more comfortable?
Beyond that, I like the cord of the E2 better as well as it's less prone to getting all kinked up... WTH were they thinking?
How do they sound? AWESOME!!! A bit of their thunder was taken by the fact that I just got some M-Audio BX8 powered reference monitors (which sound damn good
), but these things are wonderful! They'll give the HD650's a run for their money... Yes, the HD650's are better, but these also isolate (something rather important to me), aren't hot (I live in SoCal, home of the hot weather, okay you guys in Florida got us beat, but I like Washington State's weather much better), and don't put pressure on the top of your head (something that really annoys me after a while; although they do dig into your ears).
Anyway, so far, their benefits outweight their weaknesses and I'm a pretty happy camper.
Anyone know how I can get past my issues with the memory fit cable?
