Using my e5c exclusivly for a while know, I have grown used to the nice bass and treble response from my iPod. The problem is that I don't like having headphones or canalphones lying around collecting dust. Plus I'm a rocker who needs some thump in my music. Having said that, I decided to give my e4c's another chance at redemption.

Damn that efficiency difference compared to my e5c's. And to make matters worse, I use MP3gain to lower the volume even more.

Enter the SR-71. Like night and day I suppose! Using the Westone short comply tips, you don't even have to squeeze them down to put them in, just slide them in like flex tips. Anyway, I now have volume to spare with my iPod, and using the Rock, Electronic, or sometimes the latin EQ setting, I have a nice somewhat deep bass response finally from my e4c's.

low imp / high sensitivity canalphones NEED amplification just as much as high impedence models... especially the shures. I cant stand my e2c unamped. IMHO you haven't fully tapped into the ipods full capability til' you run an outboard amp from its stellar line out.

Sounds like a great portable rig.

I've always liked the bass from the ipod + SR-71 + E4 combo. It's that the line-out doesn't have a bass rolloff...so amping the ipod this way will give you the bass that's lacking in the headphone out

I just got my E4c today and i'm sure they could use some burn in, but already I like them more than the ER4-P i just sold. The Er4 had more detail, but these new phones just sound more musical, a more open airy sound stage, and more bass(not a lot but some). This thread makes me want a Sr-71 sooo bad though. I just bought a Cmoy amp, and I like it, but I head such unbelievable things about the Sr71. Isn't Ray Sammuels coming out with another protable amp? The Hornet? I think that a decent amp is next on my list of things to buy. I first I need to decide between the HF1 or the HD 650/600 etc

I just came home in rush hour, on a busy subway train, and of course I had the iPod, SR-71, and e4c trio with me. I was quite pleased with the trip, listening to Rage Against The Machine through out. The line out really does justice to the sound, and bass heavy music, like Rage, sound great through the e4c's.

I've been running my E4c's through a Porta Corda, via an iAudio X5. Instead of using the line-out on the subpack, it's been suggested that I use the headphone socket instead.

I've been somewhat unhappy with the bass response with certain bass-heavy music- Rage being one example, Massive Attack, and especially Tool. It got to the point that I almost bought a pair of UM2's...and I still might.

But I just changed the Porta Corda to be class A biased, and it seems to have really helped with the bass response. I was quite surprised at the level of difference- after reading some reports that it was a very subtle effect. Basically, anything that can add to the bottom end of the E4c's makes them a very compelling IEM...since they sound so good in most other respects...
