I recently sold my E4C to another member and I am feeling very sad that I had to get rid of them. I loved the E4 sound with the Iriver and SM3, it was magic! Unfortunately my left canal kept having problems despite the use of different tips. I mostly used the triflange which I cut a bit but my left ear got infected.

So now I will be picking up a pair of UE Super.fi 5pro since they seem to be the only IEM that seals without going in so deep. I just hope I can tweak my EQ enough to get some nice mids and highs for those female vocals.

Has anyone else had to abandon IEM's for these reasons??

Ouch, I'm sorry to hear that. I guess I was lucky, I never had such extreme problems with any IEM I used (Shure, Ety, UE). Nevertheless I couldn't stand the triflange tips from Etymotic or the hard/soft silicon tips from Shure - I guess if I used them any longer I would have ended the same way you did. My solution was using foam tips - even though I had to adjust to them, too. Ultimately I ended up using custom molds, with regard to comfort the best so far (obviously).

Good luck,
Marcus

Wow, I am so surprised to hear this, and feel very sorry for you.

Did you have a chat with the audiologist? I think your ear got infected might due to the dirty sleeves. If you make sure you wash the sleeves, and let it dry before you use it I think getting infection is not very likely.

Hehe indeed - but we have to live with the evil in order to listen to some music on the go *g*, at least if we want to listen at moderate levels.

LOL, that reminds me of mjg (IIRC) who posted with a bleeding ear about how his evil little IEM tip got stuck in his ear canal.... now that was crazy!

This has happened to me with my previous pair of IEMs. I think it was because I used the same silicon sleeve over and over again. Also I never cleaned it. I'll be sure to either clean my sleeves or replace them regularly with my next IEM.

errr...why didn't you use foamies?

I regularly replace mine every 2-3 weeks, i just got a pile of large foamies for my e2c's

I would cry if I ever got an ear infection. All of my 'phones are IEMs.

I'm going to pre-cry tonight in the shower so it hopefully never happens to me.

I got a ear infection from my ER4's right after I got them because I wore them for a week, a lot every day and then didn't really clean them. Then on a plane flight home I wore them for basically 8 straight hours

Yeah I can see why I got one

I'm sorry to hear that. I had a similar experience with my e4's recently, and also sold mine last week. Basically the problem I was having was shoving the e4's down the ear canals so deep pushed ear wax down to the point where it was blocking my hearing. This caused an uncomfortable feeling (sort of like when you get water stuck in your ears and you have to jump up and down furiously to get it out) and felt like one of the ears was always blocked. The only solution was to open the jaws really wide for temporary relief. It got to the point where I couldn't deal with it anymore so went to get it check out and what do you know...it was infected! I was given antibiotics + some chemical which you put in your ear and dissolves the ear wax. Ever since this experience, IEM's scare me...

It's funny because I used e2c, e3c, and e4c for more than 1/2 a year now, and never had any problems like this before...

Yes they were kept clean and sold clean. I could not get the seal I needed with the foamies and it was really just my left canal that was the problem I think the wax got pushed down too far like chungsoi because there was never wax on the tip from my left ear and when I would clean my ears in the morning with Q-tips I seldom got wax out of that side after I started using the E4C's.

you can only get an infection if the tips are dirty or you share them, correct? if so, then it would be your fault for having such little [headphone] hygene and disregard.
