I received the latest and sadly last offering from this fantastic Swedish jazz trio yesterday and have not stopped listening to it since. It is, in short, brilliant.
I don't claim to be an expert or connoisseur of jazz, i like what i like, and this album has really struck a chord with me.
It definitely has the trade mark e.s.t sound yet at the same time is more experimental and 'progressive' than any of their previous work, markedly so.
It is a much more complex and layered album, introducing a host of new sounds/effects on top of some fast [and sometimes slow], strong and rhythmic jazz beats. There is a very careful balance, which to their credit they have kept, never overwhelming the listener.
The album has the great ability of being able to hold your attention for its entire length. It is far, far, from 'samey'. Yet there is a somewhat natural progression between each track causing them to follow seamlessly, whilst at the same time, you get a feeling [i call it a feeling because i don't listen to a CD watching the player and the tracks tick over] things are moving and changing constantly. I think it is this that has me listening to the album over and over again. It leads you through, never startling, or grimacing, at a change of pace or emotion.
It is a truly engulfing album.
Anyone else got it and want to add/discuss?
