I have a number of Genesis discs that were dual discs - DVD audio - some Talking Heads that are dual disc - a couple of other bands...

My question is (since I never listened to the "enhanced" audio from these as there was always a regular old CD included) what type of files are these? Can they be played with an Astell & Kern player? Is 5.1 something that can only be played on a home theater DVD player? Many of these read DVD audio and not necessarily 5.1...

I just wondered if some of these were higher resolution than standard CD 16/44?

It's hard to say what is exactly on each disc, but they most likely contain 24 bit PCM audio in both surround and stereo. The sampling rate could be anything from 48 to 192.

You can use DVD Audio Extractor to rip these files. It's not free but has a 30 day trial that will allow you to rip all the discs. It will rip the files in any format you wish (WAV, FLAC, etc.)

A free DVD-A ripper is DVD Audio Explorer. It works just as well but is a little cumbersome compared to DVDAE. It only rips to WAV.
