DUNU DK-4001 --- Discussion & Impressions Thread

I agree. I'm not thrilled with their choice to roll out with such a thick gauge cable for the Hulk, though I can see that's probably what the Chinese market is looking for. Personally, I want to see them come out with a 26 AWG version. It's possible they want to reserve the 4001 version of the cable exclusively for the 4001 (and 5001, if they ever decide on doing something like that), but a thinner cable than the Hulk is probably what the wider audience is looking for --- a daily replacement for their current stock cable.

Any news on when the Hulk will be launched to market (and at what price)?

I had a couple of listens to this at CanJam SG. Definitely an upgrade over the DK-3001, especially the comfort. The sound is improved too, it's less peaky in the top end but maintains all the dynamic range. I love the cable system on this IEM, it's just superb. Also, the limited edition model (can't remember the name) really impressed me. It looks identical to the DK-4001 except for the colour but it's made from a different material and has a single dynamic driver. I really enjoyed it.

The 'Zen' ? It's supposed to be a dynamic-only model, retaining the dynamic driver of the 4001 with a re-tuning for full range performance, limited to 150 or 200 units worldwide (should be 150, considering it's built to commemorate the company's 15th anniversary), I believe.

I haven't heard it myself, but I really want to --- the dynamic driver is the star of the DK-4001 (no offense to the BA drivers; they do well, but they're not the distinguishing aspect of the 4001), and extending that driver to full range performance is a fascinating proposition.

Yes. I thought it actually competed well with the 4001 which is staggering considering it's a single dynamic and will have a lower price to boot.

HULK is now available at Penon Audio:-

Can someone pass a message to DUNU team that there is also demand for lighter / more ergonomic cable, say Spidey-like?

Indeed. I too prefer a lighter, less thick cable. If it were the same gauge and just as pliable as the stock cable of the DK-4001, it would be golden. It's possible they want to reserve the stock DK-4001 cable for just the DK-4001, but I think they can try to source an alternate cable supplier and sell it for, say, $199 ~ $249, depending on market demand and cable materials, it can be a great alternate source of revenue for them. The Hulk cable, in my estimation, is a reflection of feedback from certain sub-groups of the Chinese and Japanese audiophile community who desire thick gauge cables with exotic materials. It doesn't look ideal for portable, everyday use, however. I will definitely pass the word on --- it's what I was intending on doing, anyway.

Is there any news regarding buying the cable alone?

We are going to launch the cable "Noble" in mid-late 2019, it is the same cable that is used on the DK4001!

Finally. I found perfect damping material to 4001 slightly unrealistic, bit sharp (not sibilant) upper mid and lower highs. It was really annoying me a lot. First was changing cables like pure copper or pure silver. Nothing worked. Finally the face mask that we doctors use, the lower most white layer worked.i used double of the lower white layer as triple layering caused too much damping. Now 3D imaging became more realistic and highs balanced with rest of frequencies. Im really enjoying how its sounds now. Try this. I think you guys will be shocked. Attached image below.
