I don't know what happened, I'm using the same setup as I have been since I got the DT 880 (2003 version).

I got home from work and was sitting in silence for about an hour reading head-fi (it's kinda a noisy work environment - a restaurant - and I needed some ear rest time). My ears were feeling better so I decide it's time to turn on foobar2000. It continues playing the album Liquid Tension Experiment 2 where I left off, but the BASS is just more than I ever heard with these cans.

My setup is FLAC files to X-FI digital out (bit-matched output and ASIO used) to Entech 205.2 DAC to HeadFive. I'm using black velour DT770 earpads.

Anybody have any clue why they sound so rumbly right now? I can actually feel the air pressure on this song... 06 - Chewbacca. And I'll mention that I'm not listening any louder than I normally listen.

I just bought a pair of slightly used dt880s (2005).

I have no idea why people are complaining about the bass. It eats my Grado sr225's alive. In actuality, the bass is fairly accurate. The music can be totally bass-less if it is supposed to be, but it can handle drum and bass just fine...just fine.

He had the '03 version which has less mid bass than the '05 version.

Don't you just love placebos?

BTW, any particular reason for using DT770 pads with your DT880s?

Bass-heavy headphones tend to sound lighter over time, bass lean headphones usually get bassier. It's mental burn-in. And it's the reason I prefer bass-light setups - in the end you perceive just enough bass and more detail.

I also like good accurate bass, and have never understood why people complain about the DT880--mine are quite satisfying with acoustic jazz, classical, R&B and even the occaisonal rap song

Agreed. My SR325is have sounded positively slamming and detail-rich recently.

Yay for placebo!

(though an amp that's better than a portable certainly helps.

it's not placebo; your auditory system re-sensitizes itself to those frequencies over time. conversely, very bassy headphones will desensitize your auditory system to bass so that it will sound normal with regular use.

a bit of a digression, but this is exactly why it's not always a good idea to perform head-to-head A/B comparisons of headphones with different sound signatures. their differences will be exaggerated and your impressions might in turn as well. i learned it's better to spend some time with each headphone and see which one ends up sounding more natural, or more importantly, more pleasing.

An astute observation Shoewreck.

The mind is a powerful tool. I also collect wine. There are showy wines that are high in oak, tannin and fruit and makes you smile after half a second. Yet these types of wines get boring after half a glass. Then there are wines that get better and better toward the end of that first glass... because the oak, tannin and grapey notes do not command undue attention, the palate (mind really) is free to increasingly perceive subtle, complex flavor notes that in the end are more interesting and satisfying.

Agree with this too Shahrose. Wines that do well in mass competitions are precisely those that get boring at dinner table. A/B two wines, the more upfront and flashy will always get the nod, since the comparison is usually over a one minute period, with two tiny sips of each wine being compared. A very, very poor way to determine which will be more satisfying when served with food over a extended period of time.
