i am having a tough time deciding which is the better choice between these two headphones for gaming (FPS gaming, competitive). I gather they are amongst the most comfortable headphones around from what i have read. Between the two, which has the edge? I guess the ability to precisely perceive enemy footsteps ingame is the most important thing to go along with the comfort.

Haven't heard the dt880, but I'd go with the dt990, you might appreciate the bass on them. I love them for gaming, but I can't really comment on the footsteps because, the game I usually play, halo, doesn't rely on them so much. But I have come to rely on sound alot, the soundstage is huge. I can pretty much tell exactly where an enemy is when they shoot, even if they are across the map.

Most who do FPS prefer closed cans, thunderous sound-effects, and most important of all best position clues - all of these attributes continue to be personified in the dt770/80. IMO - dt880 is a non-starter here.......dt990? You could consider this your next best choice if you don't mind open cans. Strong bass/impact, sparkling treble and well-balanced....................more costly 2005 Manufaktur version allows you to choose 600Ω - which should not strike fear into anyones' heart......much easier to drive than you might expect. It is generally the best of all dt990 2005 versions IMO. Yes, I own all of these + Darths.........it appears I'm becoming The Accidental Beyerophile

Having owned all three, I agree. Go with the DT770/80 for gaming.

I owned the 880s for awhile before moving on to the 990s. The 990s had more of the bass and impact I was looking for. The 880s were beautifully balanced and (too) revealing.

If you're looking for a gaming headphone, I would think the 990s would suit your needs best out of the two. If you were (also) wanting to listen critically to music through a good amp and source, the 880s would be more of a consideration. The 990s are simply tap-your-toes fun with just about most types of music.

However, from what I read here, the 770s would seem to be the best gaming cans out of the Beyer mix. The lower cost would also seem more in line with "gaming cans."

one is closed, one is open...very different sounding coming from that alone...

what is the dt770/80 ...i am not getting the "/80" part. Are there two separate models being implied here? or is the model called the 770/80 ?

What makes these more suitable than the more expensive counterparts?

80 stands for ohm rating. What you need is older Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro, 80 ohm version. It has most balanced sound. 250 ohm one has most bass (and is most inbalanced), and requires good amplifier. Look at the headphone descriptions to see what ohm model the shop is selling.
