I'm just about to buy a pair of these guys, as a sort of Christmas present to myself. They will surely be the 32 ohm version, as they will be driven off a 5G iPod 99% of the time. My question is regarding their noise cancellation/isolation. I will be using these "out in the world" in downtown Chicago. How much of the city noise can I expect to come pouring in these guys. I'm familiar with how much Grado lets in, and how much HD-280's let in. Can I expect them to be somewhere in between?

Thanks fellas...

I do not have the 2005 versions, but from what I hear isolation is about the same, so dont expect much. the dt880s will not isolate. they will drown out sound if you put the volume high enough, but otherwise expect to hear just about everything, and have everyone else hear everything you play. on a scale of 1-10 of isolation, with grados being 1 and hd280s being 10, dt880s are a 2, 2.5 at most. I've owned all 3 phones so I have a fairly good idea where they stand in terms of isolation. dt880s are a home phone, I'd never recommend them as a portable unless you dont care that it leaks like crazy.

Funny you ask, I was just listening to mine through my Muvo, and thinking how little they isolate any sounds.

I have the HD280 Pro's mentioned here, but I would rate them about a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10, and with some good ear protector phones being a 10. My cheap ear protectors rated at 25db isolate MUCH better than my HD280 Pro, which are marketed with a 32db rating (certainly not using the ANSI standard of my ear protectors.) Here's some 10's for you:

Also, some good isolating IEMs would be a good choice such as the XtremeMac FS1 with the "FOAM" tips installed.

Open headphones = 0 isolation.

i have the hd600 and the dt880 and to say for sure, the dt880 have a little more between them than the hd600 which let me say... when i snap my finger, i hear every timbre and fibre of bass of flesh on flesh while the dt880 seems to foster the sound a bit... as for outside noise quality, the hd600 (9/10) is much higher than the dt880 (7/10)

I have the DT880 32 ohm phones and there is no isolation with them. However, I just love their sound. I also have the Senn HD280 Pro, which isolates fairly well. Perhaps you might want to consider the Beyer DT770, or ear canal phones.

They drown external noises much better then HD-650 or Grados.
I can't hear door bell or phone ringing whith them on. But they leak outside plenty, no less then Senns.
