Figured it's only fair to complete my headphone experiment by trying out Beyer, AudioTechnica and Stax. Beyer first though.

So in comparison the the Senn 600 and Grado 325 how does the Beyer 880 compete? Is there another open Beyer I should consider? Let me know.

Meanwhile I'll be reading through the search results which so far is Jazz jumping up and down in love with the 880

have you heard all the mentioned phone?

if not, then you shouldn't recommend the hd600. I've heard all 3 of them. My favourite is the beyer. It has much more realistic instrument sound.. and corrects many of the hd600's flaws.. like veiled, etc
grado 325 is real nice too.. but imo, has too much top end energy and abit fatiguing.
225 is nice though

Looking more for a comparison than anything else. I had the Senn and I hated it, really... no I'm serious sold it at a loss and didn't look back. I have the Grado 325 now and love the impact, speed and detail. It is pretty much perfect except it could use a little warmth to bring the emotion out more.

So I guess what I really want to know is which Beyer is nothing like the Senn and similiar to the Grado giving up some of it's analytical nature in favour of warmth. Basically shooting for a headphone that sounds like PSB Golds. Something both natural, weighty and detailed without ever sounding raw and harsh. Good right from background music volume to block the world out levels.

Solude,

If it has to be an open or semi-open headphone, the Beyer 990 or 990 Pro might be worth a try as well.

you can also try alessandro MS2 as it is like the grado sr325 but a lil different.

It just looks that way; from an enclosure standpoint, it's really open.

"Bring out the emotion more"? What do you mean by "emotion"? Try putting a 2" "O" ring (by about 1/8") underneath the pad, but right over the driver. Then add a piece of cardboard 3" x 1/8" around the outer siide of the pad (2" hole cut out). his should move the driver away a little (you may have to decrese the 'O ring' thickness to 1/16") and tame the highs and give you a slight bass boost. The cardboard is there so that the pad doesn't compress and bring the driver closer to the ear.

"which Beyer is nothing like the Senn and similiar to the Grado "?

none. The closest to the Grado will probably be the Audio Technica A1000 / W1000 and CD3000.

"without ever sounding raw and harsh" - look to your components to even out frequency response. Try mating the Grados to dark sources. (and possibly angling the driver by building up cut 'O rings'). (You may have to trim the headband driver retainers to a smaller "C").

you named FIVE headphones - , Grado, Senn, Beyer, Audio Techica, Stax.

calling Mike...

mark,
stop pulling people out of their price range!

Solude,
i had the HD600 and after a while it pissed me off BAD, even though that it was my first audiophile purchace.. now i own the DT880 and just love it (just like jazz, with EMP, and they are good too with the supermini v6).
if you liked the general direction of the senns (well that's why you bought them, right?), but didn't like where you ended up with the music, i think the beyers represent a very good alternative at a similar price.

1. do a search here for comparisons (search titles for "dt880 hd600")
2.go and listen (well that would come fast after some reading)

I never heard the Senn before buying. I knew I didn't like my previous Senn experience but figured it gets so much good press I'd start there. I can honestly say I didn't like it with anything. To me in comparison to what I have in my room and what I've heard in the past the Senn was really garbage. I just couldn't bring myself to enjoy it. It just wasn't clear, some call it veil I call it mud with a mix of strain.

By emotion I mean that something that you can't quite put your finger on but when it's there music is more involving. Typically it's warmth or prat but thats too simple.
