Wow, that was fast. Exactly 1 week from the day I ordered til I had them in my hand. Kudos to Beyerdynamic.

I must say that these are by far the best sounding cans I've heard straight out of the box. Everything sounds just perfect. They're not harsh at all and they sound very balanced and that wonderful separation and detail I remembered from when I auditioned the 250Ω version is there.
I'm also glad I went with the 880's instead of 990's since the amount of bass on these is just perfect. I love the fact that they sound so dry and flat, yet fun and engaging to listen to.

Without stating too much too early (it would kind of suck if burn-in actually decreased sound quality, hehe) these are sounding the way I had hoped the W5000 would sound.

Pics will follow asap, but my camera is pure poo and demands excessive amounts of natural light to even snap somewhat decent pictures. I can say that my design is super sweet though. ^^

Congrats on the cans.

I hope you continue to enjoy them for years to come.

I hope so too.

And I forgot to mention, I chose the velour pads as default but also ordered the leather ones. So after I've gotten more used to the 880 sound I'll switch to leather and see what difference it makes.

Nice one Wovenhand, I'm tempted to get a DT880 as well

I noticed in your sig that you have a Woo6, can I ask how well it drives the 880?

I've been reading up on the Woo in the amp section, and I'm really temped to order one.

I am looking at the 880 and Woo6 as my next purchase

I think it drives them very well. I haven't yet A/B'ed against my GL, but I'm not feeling like I'm missing something or that the WA6 is struggling. Not at all.

Also, I like the fact that the WA6 has a high/low impedance switch on the back to provide better synergy. To be honest though, I haven't done any extensive testing between high/low on same set of cans. I just flip it appropriately to fit the impedance of the can I'm using.
I'm sure it's there for a purpose though..

Congratulations!
DT880 are exceptional phones, airy and surgically detailed.
Can you please elaborate on why you prefer them over W5000. I own both and even though I like both, W5000 still have a significant advantage over DT880, because of Beyers, as you mentioned it yourself, "flat and dry" nature. I also found that there is more bass quantity on W5000. I am speaking for 250Ohm model with velour pads. I liked them with leather pads first but in the end still prefer how they sound with stock pads. Leather just takes too much of what I like about them.

For me dry and flat is where it's at (hey, that rhymed). I suspect you have a better fit with your W5000's, cause I've bent the headband and changed the angle of the housings a zillion times, and the bass is still not satisfactory. On the DT880's it's just right.
I also have waa-ay better separation with the DT880's than the W5000's. I'm hearing details I've never heard before and even in dense distorted rock they separate the instruments beautifully (but not "too much").
The soundstage is also just tops - it's wide and really defined.
And like you said, they have an airy quality - which I do like indeed.

Since it was like a month ago since I auditioned the 250Ω version (and with completely different source/amp) I can't speak for the differences between 250Ω and 600Ω, but I can say that I was re-eally happy with that I was hearing with the 250Ω version. Just going from memory I'd say the difference between the two is pretty small.

I miss the mid range clarity and airiness of the K701s.. Sooooooooo, I was considering getting the DT880s (600 ohm) to replace them, BUT that's the last thing I need to do to my wallet!

I was choosing between the 880 and K701, but I didn't have a chance to audition the K701's and since I liked the 880's I went with them.
Still curious to hear the K701's...
I must add that the 880's are really comfy too.

Another satisfied 600 ohm Beyer owner! Congrats.
