I've had these almost a year and as of recently I've been paying more attention and honestly I feel the positioning/staging in games isn't as pronounced as I'd like it to be. Is this really as good as it gets or does everyone here recommend them for gaming just because of the crazy bass? I've been thinking about trying the K701s because I've heard the soundstage is almost unnaturally large. Any opinions?

Yeah, get some Darths. Seriously, the 701s work great for footsteps but my Open Darths own the 701s in that department.

For around $200 the 701s are kicking plenty of ass for gaming but the bass ain't great.

Yeah I considered darths but having a 450 dollar pair of gaming headphones seems pretty silly

All I'm concerned with is footsteps as I only play MP games in leagues. I'll try the 701s out, I've always wanted to give them a listen anyway.

The dt880's imaging is about 2 levels above the dt770's. So, no, the dt770s aren't as good as it gets

I feel they are recommended for gaming, however, because they are relatively cheap, doesn't necessarily need an amp, and have fun bass and soundstage(again, for the price).

SA5000's are great for gaming. You can find used pairs on head-fi for less than $300. It might fit your music tastes better than a K701, too.

Btw, the SA5000's have tighter positioning. Sounds on the K701's are diffused in comparison.

The Sa5000s soundstage isn't very big and it's $80-100 more than the 701 which appears to be important to him.

It's tight imaging specifically, I think the op is looking after(being a gamer myself...). THAT, he can find on a Grado

*edit* Bleh, a great soundstage makes it all the more fun

I'm not looking to spend more than 250 since I LOVE the grado sound and highly doubt I'll use anything else for music listening, getting a pair of SR225s soon.

I'm looking for a headphone that will seemingly surround me with the action. I want to be able to hear a gun shot or footstep and be able to tell where it came from with my eyes closed.

"Seemingly surround me with the action."

Well I take that back, you will need a headphone with a good soundstage for that

I'll recommend the dt880's. Funny, your setup is 95% the same as mine(including the dt770), and I found the dt880 a nice step up from the dt770/80 for gaming. Like I said before, the imaging is at least 2x better than the dt770's(YMMV), and the soundstage is awesome. You can read my opinion of the soundstage here, if you'd like

Wow... I'll have to think about the 880s then. Anyone have both the 880s and the 701?

Afireinside for sure there is alternatives. But beware what you ask for! I have used the DT 770 for long and got the A900... That is in reality an open headphone and it had actually to wide soundstage... When using CMSS3D or dolby headphone everything appeared to be too distant...

A900 do leak a lot of sound in which explains their wider soundstage I think. Otherwise open headphones just about always have a wider soundstage for good and bad...

Currently I am sitting on my Proline 750 and for soundstaging it absolutely kills the A900 and DT 770... But then it´s another price range are you wlling to invest 300$ on your headphones? For me it was worth every dime and more.

Stronger, tighter, better bass extention, more bass then the DT 770.
Sounds cleaner then both the DT 770 and A900 combined (however beware for games with lots of distortion the 750 likes to broadcast it as well
wink.gif
).

Soundstage is out of this world phenomenal awesome positioning and for me it hits the sweetspot where the soundstage is neither to close or to wide.

Maybe for gaming the Proline 650 would be better since they are more forgiving on bad recordings but then they are also coloured like the DT 770 may be a bit too similar? Make no misstake the 750 has stronger bass but it has the upper registers to balance it out

Otherwise DT 990 many likes for gaming as well.

Yea, maybe look at the Darth Beyers for a great closed headphone. I personally game with them, and am very happy.

You *may* also want to check out the Denon D2000...... I've never used them, but they may work well for games.
