I am tempted to pick up some of these for some big bass and just as a change from the DT531 now and again. Wonder if anyone can comment on the sound quality and bass of the DT770 / 990 from the Perreaux SXH1, particularly for electronica, rock, movies, games?

I think I have probably figured out I like bass, but was wondering if the DT770 sounds muddy on the Perreaux, like it does on most other amps I've tried it with except the X-Can amps which seemed to sound pretty good with it.

Or maybe there is another can that does big powerful bass that maybe does it better (DT150?)...

That is the rumor, though very few have heard it. I almost bought one, but went for them more common K271S or my road to the CD3K

I will be able to audition the DT150 as well, more than likely with my amp and one of their PC's. Might be worth a crack I guess.

SGHeadphones seems to have died now but there were some fairly promising reports on it.

I currently have a DT 770 Pro (for sale here incidentally) paired with a HA-1 and XP-7. The bass is very strong in these Beyers but I find the mids and highs a little too recessed. It's unfortunate because I find the mids and highs to be quite good actually. Very clear and articulate, especially for bass-heavy phones. Not overly sibilant either. But they are just too recessed and the bass overpowers the sound. The bass itself is very strong and not that muddy. It's just the overall sound isn't balanced like I'd like it to be. Because of this imbalance, it almost feels muddy although I don't think it really is. However, these Beyers might work well in an adjustable EQ scenario (which I don't have).

That said, these headphones are THE gaming and movie headphones to hear. The bass emphasis works perfectly for games and movies. Unfortunately, I don't game that much nor do I watch movies too often with headphones. Otherwise, I'd be keeping these phones for this purpose.

I had sold off my 990s before I got the 770s for my husband. The 770s aren't my cup of tea, but I do think that maybe you'll find that special synergy with the Perreaux that you did with the dt531. For one thing, the sibilance and hashness of the highs is gone with the Perreaux. What's added is more space, and while the bass is front and center, no doubt about it, you can hear the other information there in the backround. In other words, not muddy. Low, echo-y but not muddy. At any rate, could be worth an audition.

Paul: I still wonder why you didn't get big bass from the K240S. Anyway, the DT440 coould be worth a try for you, too...

After trying a couple other closed cans, one thing I can say about the DT 770 is that they don't have the honky coloration that a lot of closed cans seem to have.

Funny, I have the DT770 250Ohm as well, and the highs are very good for me. With sibilant recordings, the DT770s can be very harsh in fact. The bass is very good, and fits in well. The mids can be a bit too dark for classical however, but this can be helped a bit by turning both the treble and the bass down with an EQ from about 200hz down and 5khz up.

I am powering my DT770s with a Marantz 2230B receiver.
