DT770 users, lend me your ears (and your eyes of course).
I'm interested to know whether what I want below will be met by the DT770. It's especially helpful if you have other phones by which both of us can relate. I've read kelly's review but it wasn't that comparative... I think he compared them to the DT250 which is DEFINITELY not what I want.

Putting my needs roughly, I want these characteristics out of a 100% gaming-use phone. A not too sharp, but quite extended top end as well as a considerably visceral but controlled bass, combined with a wide soundstage which works very well with 3D positioning.
Source: Live! card with a World Audio HD83 amp. Although this amp is tube-based, it's not overly 'warm' in presentation.
As long as the phone does justice to the source/amp combo and does 3D positioning well, absolute fidelity is not an overriding need. Fully sealed optimal, semi-sealed acceptable...Fully open is not. What I really want is something better than a MDR-CD1700 bass-wise ('snappier' yet more bass)

Bangraman,

you really didn't think I'd waste my 1000th post, did you?

What's wrong with using the A900 or A1000 for gaming?

Waste? Mmmm, dunno. Have you heard the A900?
Put it like this, I crawled past a friendly tank shooting it's machine guns in Ghost Recon with the CD1700 and I could almost feel the noise. The thing is, the bass is a bit, how to describe it, still a bit muddy...
I also get the feeling that the 3D positioning is less accurate on the CD1700 than the ATH-A900.

Reader, if you've tried both the above and can relate to this, exactly what I want is something with more/better bass than the MDR-CD1700 and as good a treble and 3D-positioning as the ATH-A900, with ideal mid response being something inbetween. If that's not the DT770, that's a shame as I'll have to continue hunting...

...wouldn't 3d positioning be much more dependent on the soundcard, and next on the amp, than on the headphones?

I use the DT770 for gaming, directly out of an Audigy, and am quite satisfied. Maybe that will make you think I'm a Philistine!

For those that don't know about the HD83: http://www.worldaudiodesign.co.uk/wadproducts/hd83.html

what SBLive! sound card are you using, Bangraman? (sb16, awe64, 128, 512, audigy 1, 2, etc). what driver version? what platform (P3, P4, Athlon, etc). What OS? What DX version? Does changing from "speakers" to "headphones" change the positioning? what are the in-game settings? (many games default to non-hardware acceleration, etc).

I use the 770's for gaming. Mostly battlefield 1942 atm. I can pick the direction of planes and such are coming from long before i can see them.

this is out of an audigy through an OBH11.

They were a little uncomfortable for extended sessions initially but they're great now

Now that they're reshaped your head with their clamping force?

I used the 770pros for gaming for quite a while and loved them. Perfect isolation, great explosion impact and excellent positioning.

Yeah.
The beyer dt770pro is by far best or at least one of the best when it comes to gaming. Very impactful bass and plenty of them, good positioning, comfortable for long hour of usage, and also they are very good for music .
Mind you, my setup is only through soundcard and to obh11 and the beyer. And if I can hear such a good audio experience, I can't imagine how it will fare with better sources.

, Guyferd. Just a quick question, what others have you gamed with? Comparative opinions? Thanks

I use my DT770 for gaming.
The 3D positioning is quite good and so is the isolation.

For comparison purposes I have used the Senn 580, AKG 501, Beyer 831, Beyer 250-80, and the Alessandro/Grado MS1 for gaming in addition to the 770.
I prefer the 250-80 and 770 for gaming, with the 770 having an edge over the 250-80 due to the 770's bass impact.

I am using a Soundblaster Live 5.1 and a Kevin Gilmore amp by antness.

Other headphones I've gamed with include the AKG K401, the Sennheiser HD600 and various crappy Labtec-type headphones. The DT770 is the best for gaming because its bass goes deeper than the others, plus it does not seem as harch when driven by the soundcard headphone jack.

I was using an Earmax Pro for gaming for a while but that seemed like overkill.
