There does not seem to be much of a difference in terms of price for these two models, so what really separates the two?

I've read that they can also be somewhat hard to drive unless I go with the dt-770m. Is there much of a difference in sound quality with the 'M' model?

Would my headroom airhead be able to drive these cans ok? And if so is it a good match?

Is the 'Darth Beyer' mod a must?

Sorry lots of questions, much appreciated!

Stay clear of the DT770 M. I've never heard a single good thing about it.

If you can do with open headphones, then the DT880 is probably a better choice all around, but I really enjoy the DT770/80 Pro anyway.

The amp you mention may drive these headphones better than, say, the headphone jack of a typical PC, but still nowhere near the potential of the headphones. I have used my DT770/80 Pro for a long time with a Hornet, and they sounded alright. I actually was very satisfied with this combination until I got an Apogee Duet and started using that. The difference is substantial.

If I could choose any amp for the DT770/80 Pro, it would probably be a Gilmore Lite. I ordered one a while ago, but ended up canceling since the wait turned out to be longer than I could endure.

I have never listened to Darth Beyers, so can't comment on whether they're worth it. To me, they wouldn't be, since I could pick up a new pair of Ultrasone Pro 750 for the price of mods and still have the already impressive DT770/80 Pro.

Yea open or closed, does not really matter. Whatever gives me the best sound quality.

Go with DT-880 then. It will work better for a wider selection of music imo. I own both.

What amp do you use with your DT-880?

My favorite amp for DT-880 is a Woo Audio 3 (tube amp). My only other "home"/AC powered amp is the PreSonus Central Station which is a very clean sounding solid state (SS) amp/DAC/a lot of other stuff...with the CS the DT-880 sounds very detailed but I prefer the sound that tubes give.

...OH, and my newest toy (the Pico) sounds great too!

The DT770s are very bassy compared to the DT880s. The Darth Beyer mod seems to even out the bass and transform the DT770s into a totally different headphone...but I'ld demo them before I simply decided to get some Darth Beyers.

I chose the DT990s as they're perfect for rock...the DT880s are more versatile and neutral so it depends on what you prefer.

If you're on a tight budget the Mini^3 is great. Otherwise most say a Meir Audio amp is perfect for Beyers

Hrmm. Currently I have a set of MS-1's which is great for rock. I want something with more bass response/quantity for some more electronic stuff.

Then you don't want DT-880.

DT-770 80pro would be a better choice then? So many headphones what to choose!

Yes, that would be an excellent choice for electronic music. Your total bithead should provide enough power, but for better performance, step up to a home amp like a Corda Arietta.

Make sure to get the 80 ohm version

Will I loose any sound quality going to the 80 ohm version rather than the 250?

I vote go for DT 770 if you want variety. It has a log of bass. Some people describe the mid range as congested, but that is probably because there is so much emphasis in the bass. If you have a good amp, I think getting 250 Ohms is better. I read more reviews where people like the 250 Ohm over the 80, but I also have read the opposite a few times too.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to try and sell my airhead and get something more powerful. And perhaps pick up a set of dt770's or AH-D2000. Haven't decided yet.

I read that the Ultrasone PROline 750 has serious bass...not that I've ever considered buying them.
