Has anyone heard both of these cans? I'm wondering what differences one would notice going from the DT770-80 to the DT250-250 (note: not the DT250-80).

Are the DT250-250's brighter? Fuller sounding through the midrange? More balanced overall than the DT770-80?

Also, is there enough difference in sound between the two to warrant owning both pairs, or are they similar enough that it would be better to have just one of the two?

I had the chance to audition them side by side about 2 years ago. The dt250-250 just sounded fuller/more balanced than the dt770s overall, but can sound slightly glary (high mids acentuation?) when coming from a darker system.

Well, it will be a closed can to compliment my recently acquired SR60's, so I think I'll be used to a can that has more forward mids, which is a good thing.

Did the DT770 sound too bassy with "scooped mids" compared to the DT250-250? The good thing is that I can sell my DT770-80 & the DT250-250 won't cost me anything out of pocket.

LOL, cool, I may have to do that. My big thing is that I want a closed can that does electric guitar a little better than the DT770-80's. They do a good job, but I want something that's a little more upfront, but still closed, and right now the DT250-250 is looking like a fine choice, especially for the ~$150 range.

I know you mentioned that you wanted a dt250-250 comparison, but since now one seems to be helping you. I might as well chime in with my dt-250-80 experience.

The biggest difference was the mid bass and mids. These phones were full of mids. I loved these phones and miss them very much, but the stiff ear plug bothered me to no end. I may still have to pick myself up a pair. I still have the 770's and awaiting my verdict until I get my amp.

I'm thinking that fullness in the mids is what would make them a better closed can option for rock and metal music than the DT770-80. I was listening to the 770's last night and I still really enjoy them. I'm just hoping someone out there would have a more definitive answer as to whether or not the DT250 is a better rock can. Perhaps I should ask Lini? Maybe if I put a post out about the DT250 in general (i.e. not specifying the 250 ohm version), I'd get more answers?

BTW, how far down does that earplug stick out on the 250's?

Compared to the DT 770-80, the DT 250-250 is more balanced from top to bottom - especially in the midrange, less recessed in the mid and upper treble, more airy, has less bass - both impact and lower bass extension, softer in the transient attacks, smaller headstage, more portable.

Would you say that, even though they have less bass than the DT770-80, they still have plenty of bass? Also, how is the soundstage on the 250-250 versus the 770-80? That's one thing I'm consistently impressed with on the 770-80 is the great soundstage they have.

My big problem right now is deciding if I want to sell the DT770's to finance the purchase of the DT250-250's, or if I want to just buy the DT250's and a/b the two cans and then decide what to do. I guess I'll need to find a place with a good price on the DT250-250's that also has a good return policy.

I'm hoping that the DT250-250 will be more of an all-arounder, thus getting more use by me, rather than a "one-trick pony" which is what some think of the DT770 (I'm not in that camp, although I can see how they do bassy stuff better than anything else).

The headstage is more narrow compared to the DT 770-80's and has less depth. Heigth is about the same. Actually, I was not very impressed by how the 770-80 utilized its solid headstage potential. It did not create a such a holographic image like the A900 nor did it make the music sound like coming from outside the limited headstage very much. Hence you could say the amount of space portrayed was big enough but sticking by the differentiations between soundstage and headstage provided by darth nut, the DT770-80 did not do very well. The DT 250-250 is not better though, rather worse at best. Nevertheless, going by the common use of soundstage (i.e. mixed with headstage), the DT 770-80 has one of the best soundstages among the closed headphones under $200, only second to the A900.

The bass sounds quite balanced but I prefer a subtle bass bias on my portable headphones. Less than Sennheiser HD 25-1 or A900. From an audiophile perspective there's plenty of bass but some may see it differently as a friend of mine considered it rather light compared to his Sony V300.

The DT 250-250 is indeed the better allrounder but that really depends on what you're looking for. In overall sound quality terms, I preferred the DT 250-250 because it has hardly any flaws, which at the same time was also its biggest plus. If you can afford both at the same time, that'd certainly be a good way to decide yourself since nothing can replace personal experience after all.

The earpads on the DT250 are too small for me. I prefer the true circumaural of the DT770.

Soundwise, I find the DT250 a bit more forward/ragged - the DT770 a tad slower cause of the awesome bass.

I have never heard the DT770-80, only the 770-pro (250 ohm, maybe?). It had better isolation, and about 9 db more bass than anything. Unfortunately it was a very nonuniform response, voiced (I think) for noisy environments.

I still love the DT250-250 for their balance, comfort, and general utility. They are still the only headphone that I own that I don't EQ.

Well, I broke down and ordered a new pair of DT250-250's for $153 shipped from Bhphotovideo.com. I should be able to compare them to the 770-80 next week and decide what I want to do. I don't have a problem getting rid of the 770's if the 250's are better. I have a feeling I'll still love the sound of the 770's, and that I'll also like the 250's, so I'll probably just keep them both!

gerG, I think I know what you mean by nonuniform response. Compared to the 80 Ohm version, the 770-250 sounds rather thin in the middle with a upper midrange emphasis, more boomy in the bass but with similar recessed mid and upper treble. Quite unsatisfying lower to mid midrange.

The 250-250 really has a wonderful frequency response but somehow it's not the most exciting headphone. The attack always seems to be a bit on the softer side. I really wanted to keep that headphone but it wasn't portable enough either with less than ideal isolation and bulkiness.
