I want to buy these 'phones to try 'em out. Is Guitar Center the place to go? Or are there better options online? I sure can't find any...

And, what's the deal on the price at Guitar Center? I've never haggled price at a retail store... do I just call them up and offer to buy them for $150, and see what they do?

Also, my current set of "high-end" phones are the HD590s. I've got a JMT PIMETA on the way. Am I correct in my expectation that the DT770/80s will be more energetic, pack a little more 'punch,' than the HD590s? Are there any here who think the 590s are actually superior to the DT770/80s?

Thanks for the help,

-Chad

When I bought my beyer from Guitar center,
Me: How much will this be?
Sales person: 200 + tax
Me: Can I try it?
Sales person: sure
after trying
sales person: what do you think?
me: good, Can I have it for $150?
Sales person: Let me check
after checking
Sales person: We can sell it for $175
Me: mmmm, no thank's, I think I can get it online for $150
Sales person: Ok then , $150 + tax
Me: Ok
Paid $150 + tax total $159, Some people looks like can get them $150 after tax. Try asking them for $140

RYCeT,

Wow. I must be a poor telephone negotiator. I just called the local Guitar Center and asked if they had those 'phones in stock. The rep said they did, I asked the price, he said $200, I said "Woah, I can get them for less than that online!" and his reply was: "Print out the online ad from an authorized reseller and we'll match the price." And he wouldn't budge on it

Oh, well.

That's they're standard policy, some of their sales people will automatically take your word, though, or they just want to sell stuff fast.

I went to the Guitar Center because I heard they sold the Allesandro series. I went in and asked about the difference between Grados and Allesandros. They looked at me like I was from out of space and pointed me to a bunch of "DJ" headphones I could have bought at Kmart. I was very disappointed. I recommend shopping at Hi Fidelity audio stores, although I have never bought from one. All my shopping has been from the internet based on extended studies here at head-fi.

Huh. I guess I'll just try my luck again. I hope I don't get the same guy when I call tomorrow

When you say "Hi Fidelity" audio stores, are you talking about small, privately owned shops selling high-end equipment, or a specific line of stores by that name?

I usually shop on the 'net too, but this deal from Guitar Center sounds great. I just hope I can manage it at my local store.

Tell them you have a few friends that have bought them at that price recently in other stores.

Hi coalescent, have you got it already? When I was doing it, I didn't expect much, All I was thinking at that time, If I get it great, if not, I'll buy A900, so just go and give "take it or leave it" attitude.

Yeah!!!

I called the Guitar Center in Memphis this morning and got Aaron, one of the managers, who was working in the accessories department. He wouldn't talk about prices over the phone, but when I mentioned having friends who purchased these 'phones at other GC locations and who talked down the price quite a bit, he said "That's what we're here for! C'mon in and we'll talk."

So I drove over to this Memphis Guitar Center, not really sure what to expect--I knew I'd get something knocked off, but I wasn't sure how much. It was about an hour drive from where I live, but I didn't tell him that!

I'm not sure I've ever actually engaged in bartering before in my life. It's just not something I've ever done (or thought I could do in a retail store!). So I really wasn't sure how to approach it.

Well, I went up to him, told him I was the guy who called, and when he asked how much my friends had paid for their DT770/80s, I told him "most of them got 'em for $150, one for $175," which was my subjective memory of what I'd read here on head-fi.

" I'll give 'em to you for $120 ," he replied.

I was stunned. And really freakin' happy, of course. I bought 'em and thanked him profusely. They are indeed the correct 'phones, and they're the 80ohm version, just like I wanted--it's printed right on the side of the 'phones themselves.

I honestly figured that I wouldn't be able to get him down past $175. I was just amazed. Props to Guitar Center, and if any of you guys live in the Memphis area, be sure to consider giving Aaron your business! He's the man!
