Hello.
My previous experience with headphones is limited. I've listened to Grado SR60, five or so AKG headphones, Sennheiser PX100, PX200, HD457, 477 and 497, Beyer DT250-250, Philips 890 and 200, and my two favourites so far, the DT231 and HD280Pro.
Last week I decided to shell out the bucks Beyer are requesting for their DT660's, -a new closed headphone that a portable can handle. This has proven to be a successfull story.
On arrival the DT660's didn't play very loud or very nice on my JOS-MP110 MP3 player (7+7mw output), but now, after a couple of days of heavy use, they are really nice. The only area I can say they are "lacking" is in dynamics. The DT231 produces superb bass, and the HD280Pro is still unmatched in the low frequency area for me. What those two phones seem to lack (they aren't bad, they are just not as good) compared to the DT660 is two things; controlled highs and spatial feel. The DT660's seem to be able to play everything ok, and reproduce the sound recorded with no added extras like extreme dynamics or similar. The highs on the HD280Pro are a bit sharp, but this is not the case on the DT660.
The clarity in sound is better on the HD280Pro, pherhaps because they isolate better than the DT660. The DT660 seem more muddy. This can be becuase of the fact that the HD280Pro isolate better, or the fact that my head is tricked by the HD280Pro, having leather pads, making for a "cleaner" feel.
I highly recommend the DT660's to audio-freaks. For others, the DT231's are still my best bet around. Value, and balanced sound in a superb set of cans.
