Dear Head-Fiers.

I've had my Dt531 for a while now and I love them. I usually drive them through my ipod and sometimes through a reciever (significantly better).
I'm very short of money right now so I'm thinking about a cheap cmoy or something like that. I found one here on Head-Fi in the sale forum. In this amp there's a OPA2134PA amp. Would this be good enough to drive my babies ? And can you (upgrade?) to OPA-227 afterwards. Maybe there's other alternative but they should be cheap.

Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated.

The DT531s are relatively hard-to-drive cans; using them directly out of the iPod's headphone jack is sure to get lackluster results. A decent 18V CMoy would certainly push the 531s loud enough, but whether they could make the DT531 really show its stuff is another story entirely.

I would recommend at least a PIMETA, or alternatively, sell or trade the DT531s for headphones that are easier to drive and less amp-picky. I'd definitely be willing to swap them for my DT440s.

Oh no I'd sell my soul before I sell these babies. I love them even when I drive them through my iPod. But back to the amp..Is it very hard to build your own PIMETA ? Myself don't have that experience but my dad is pretty experienced.

I agree with aeriyn. A Cmoy would definitely help, but something like a Pimeta would be better. Other options to consider: a Go-Vibe, a Porta Corda mkII, or a Super Mini Moy or a Maxi Moy. I think any of the latter would be better than a Cmoy for driving the DT 531.

Okey I've now made a conclusion that a cmoy probably won't do it. So what do you guys recommend for my DT531 ? My budget is around 100 $. I've searched around a lot and there's simply to many of these amps, so some proffesional help would be greatly appreciated.

I may be getting a Porta Corda Mk II, and if that happens I may sell my Go-Vibe. If so, I'll contact you...

How about a second hand receiver?

as I found myself spending more time with my MS-2 and dont like redundant stuff around the house. They found a good home so I dont feel sorry.

Anyway I used a nice Mint to drive the DT-531. While this improved the DT-531 nicely over the iPod headphone out, I always felt there´s lots more potential to unlock with a killer amp. It´s just my gut feeling, but maybe there is someone out there who can confirm it...?

Cheers M.

Didn't you like the DT531 with the PPX3?

Personally, I'd recommend a warmer-sounding amp to compliment the DT531s drier midrange. In your shoes, I'd be looking at tubes or a similar-sounding solid-state unit like a Perreaux. However, this is a personal preference, and you might loose some potential impact and clarity. It all depends on how you want to 'tweak' your DT531s.

It would be really nice but I'll probably never get that kind of money to buy a tube or Perreaux. One alternative that I thaught about is building a PIMETA. Is it hard to build one ? As I mentioned before I don't think myself could do it but my dad is more experienced. Oh, this IS a tough decision .
