Hi,
After having owned the 770 Pro's, I can honestly say they are the closest I have come to headphones that I really enjoy using, however, obviously, after a couple of months, their faults begin to surface. However, they are not beyond redemption, and I would like to hang on to them, as they are a fun headphone, and definetly have their uses.
However, there are a number of things that irritate to varying measures, and it is this that prevents them from being as good sounding as my speaker system.
Firstly, the bass, while it is very good, and speaker like, is sometimes OTT, even for trance music. Certain songs can sound muddy and appear to have a constant wall of bass rather than being defined. The situation has improved since I started using my integrated amp rather than headphone amp to drive them, but still there is room for improvement.
Secondly, the midrange is a tad recessed, even out of the integrated, and considering my source has quite a prominent midrange. The result is that obviously the meat of some music is missing, and low level details are struggling to be heard, details I can clearly hear in my speaker system.
Third, the treble is sibilant, as others have noted. Using my integrated has not cured this problem (nor has it made it worse), and some treble sounds in dance music can be really harsh and cutting.
Overall, the 770 have a tonality that manages to be both dark, and harsh at the same time. Some music sounds really good on them, but other music I feel could be done more justice by a more balanced headphone.
After doing a search on here, it seems like the DT250 (250 ohm) could be what I am looking for. It seems that while the mids are still perhaps *slightly* recessed, its not as much so as the 770, and the treble lacks the same harshness, but is clear, and the 250's still appear to possess very good, hard hitting bass, that is faster than that of the 770, which seems to possess some overhang.
I have used to headroom chart to compare the 770 with 250-250 and using the equaliser in Foobar 2000 MP3 player, have tried to approximate the sound of the 250's using the 770's.
The result appears much more pleasing to my ears.
However, I would like some comments on whether the 250-250 would be a good choice for me, as they are not cheap.
Thus far, I have owned the 770's and 931's, which as you may recall, I found too bass light, far too bright, and lacking musicality, so, are the 250-250's the answer to my prayers?
Edit: Can anyone comment on the comfort of the 250's. So far the 931's were by far the most comfortable cans I tried, the 770 Pro's headband is very nearly too small for my head, and I had to take the leather band off. They are nowhere near as comfy as the 931's IMO, but still very comfortable.
