the reviewer says the DT-990 has a similar sound signature to Sennheisers, can anyone who has heard both of the flagship headphones of these manufacturers (650 and 990) confirm or dispel this?

Haven't read the article. Not sure if they're talking about the older 990s or the '05 version. I had both the '05 DT-990 and HD-650 for a period of time and found them quite different in signature.

In the most general terms:
HD-650 > big emphasis on mids and bass, less emphasis on treble
DT-990 > big emphasis on highs and bass, less emphasis on mids.

The only thing in common is emphasis on bass.

No way in Hell.. I have both.. Totally different.. DT990's are harsh & have recessed mids..Are much brighter then the 650's & lack the weight & 'boom' of the 650's.. Bass

I have only heard the DT-990 briefly but even I can tell the two phones sound very different. I did not really like the Beyer at all.

x2. unless you eq the beyers, they don't sound similar at all.
