Which of these, unamped(unless of course i can connect it to my xr-55 if it makes a difference) would be a better choice for rap music,R&B and for good positioning in games.

DT770s need amping I believe. RP-21s are good for R&B and Rap. I don't know about the a500s though.

I'm sorry I don't use my laptop for gaming.

Hooking the DT770 to my computer sound fine. I have no doubts an amp WOULD help, but not necessarily a need.

the dt770 dont require an amp but sound much better with one. they are very fun for gaming but have recessed mids. i heard the rp-21s had good bass and i know the dt770's bass is wow. thats all i can tell you though as i havent heard the rp-21 or the a 500. I really wouldnt buy the dt770 unless you were gonna go pay to have it modded.

thanks
being as this is my first hi-fi headphone, ive taken the dt-770 out then as i rather get a better hi-end headphone down the road instead of investing more into the dt.
So im down to the rp-21 and the ath-a500 hoping someone can break the barrier between these.

forget the A500s, get the 700s. Its a step above and it's worth stepping up. looking at the price range that youre looking at btw.

I had the 700s and they were good. they were my first cans and if it wasnt for the lack of isolation and the size, id still have them. soundwise, if it's your first time having a good set of cans, youll be wowed. when I had them, it was the first time I knew soundstaging and instrument separation (of course theres other cans thats better).

oh yeah, while we're at it, for the DT770s owners...

I eying to buy a pair soon since the CDN$ is appreciating. to cut the long story short though, how do these isolate from outside noise? I'm going to be using them for my commutes (1-2 hours per day). How much noise can they block out?

I have a pair of the 80 ohm version that I used at work with a Chaintech A-710 sound card for a while, and now I use them with the iBasso D1. I also have a pair of AKG K271. These two models are among the better closed phones in their price category.

The Chaintech was enough to drive the DT-770s reasonably well. I didn't have many complaints about that setup. The phones isolated very well for an office environment and were very very comfortable. The recessed mids were there, but it was not objectionable. When I started using the iBasso though it was a major improvement in the dynamic impact of the sound. The Chaintech was adaquate, but the iBasso really opened things up to a whole new level.

The AKG's are an interesting comparison. They have a much more forward sound that is a nice contrast. But I also find that they are much less comfortable - the pads are either leather or fake leather, and the clamping force is much higher. Even though I think I like the sound better than the DT-770's, the comfort factor has me wearing the DT-770's much more.

im learning a lot here, it seems the dt-770 are great when you get an amp or take a few extra steps for them, but i havent seen anyone say that theyre preferred over the other ones unamped or changed, especially since i hear their mids arent that good.
I think ive taken the a500 out and replaced it with the a700 or the rp-21.
Which one of these would be more competitive for gaming, and better for rap music , so also which one provides better base ?
