can either of these drive hd580s with ease? or any other portable amp/dac combos that i'm not thinking of? total bithead is out as i've just recently acquired one and can't seem to get the volume i want without clipping. getting some advice on other options before i make another splurge.

looking for people with experience with the tbh/hd580 combo as i've seen people here say you shouldn't have a problem using the two together. guess i just need more volume than your usual head-fier.

Porta Corda II had no problems with hd600 or hd650, I don't see why the III should have any problems with hd580 =]

III is the updated version. II was an older model that I have. III USB will do just fine for you.

Todd the Vinyl Junkie also sells Corda amps. The newest Porta Corda version has an internal switch to adjust gain. Maximum gain is 17dB and that's a lot, so you shouldn't have problems to drive virtually any phone even from a low level source.

I use my PC MkIII-USB often with my PC...sorry, I'll never sell mine.

It drives my HD 650 very well. I leave mine at high gain and use 13 volts to power it. It can use up to 28 volts I believe. Power is very good with fresh 9 volt too.

i must mention that i had plans to power this solely off USB. for all i know the TBH could drive the 580s just to my liking via batteries, but i don't care much to go that route to even find out. can the III-USB run both it's amp/dac off USB or is it battery required?

also about how many hours do you guys get out of it?

The Porta Corda MkIII-USB can be powered (amp & DAC) from the USB power alone. Using USB power it still has very good power from my experience. Just today I got permission from Dr. Meier to use the 30 volt setting on my AC adapter.

I notice a nice improvement with this higher 13.5 & 30 volt power over the USB or 9 volt power. This improvement is only realized when driving hard power hungry cans such as my Darth Beyers which require solid power to reach their limits , bass wise. OH YES!

I have never tested battery life with either alkaline or NiMH. Battery life seemed to be decent though.

I was going to guess 40 hours max. At one time I was using it in a portable situaution but that was too long ago to be precise.
