Given their high sensitivity, the Shure IEMs are easily driven. But I was wondering if they can be driven (to sufficient satisfaction) directly from the MicroDAC's line output with the Shure attenuator cable attachment in the chain (without an amp)?

Would the sound be better that way vs. a good PCDP or iPod's lineout + an actual amp, or not?

Anyone actually try this before (speculation is not really useful)?

I did try this, but found that the amp gives the sound a warmer tone. I didn't try for a very long period of time, but I'm pretty sure I enjoyed the sound with the amp much more.

Yes! Very true.

Also worth noting is that you can't change the volume with your typical system mixer as it is meant to be a fixed level output. I was able to bring it down to reasonable levels via the volume control inside my player. It obviously changes the volume at the software/program level.
