Donation Suggestions Please

Greetings,

I owe Head-Fi quite a number of reviews and for the delay I'm very sorry. Recently, my mother passed away and I was tied up with little time for music and leisure, let alone head-fi.

Down to business: About SGD$4000 was collected at her wake and the money will be donated to charity. Choosing the right one is the only step left and I would appreciate any suggestions. The ideal charity would be one that is:

i) Efficient
ii) Transparent
iii) Reputable
iv) Have direct effects on emergencies/people in dire circumstances.

I'm currently considering:

1) www.mercycorps.org (I donate to this charity)
2) Unicef.
3) Any other methods of helping the needy such as organising soup patrols/giving out meals etc...

Any suggestions would be great, but please try to give me some background information to support your views.

You can take a look at www.charitynavigator.org to research charities and their efficiency.

Another place for research/ratings is: http://www.charitywatch.org. They research and rate various charities along various dimensions of performance and efficiency (e.g. what % of your dollars goes to the cause vs. into overhead to raise money).
