wow, that is a really neat story, we have 7(yes seven, don't worry, they are all well cared for, and get plenty of attention) chihuahuas in our home, and they are amazing dogs, as small as they are, they arnt afraid of anything, especially when they are together, they almost have a pack mentality

Tree falls between baby and stampeding elephant, tree proclaimed hero.

San Francisco, Cal. - A rampaging elephant thought to have contracted rabies escaped from a local zoo before it could put it down. After terrorizing a residential neighborhood for three hours it smashed its way into the backyard of Howard and Kim Brandywine, where their newborn was sleeping in the middle of the yard.

Little baby Justin was a split second away from being trampled when a eucalyptus fell between him and the mad elephant. The elephant suffered lacerations to the trunk and neck, but miraculously baby Justin was completely unharmed.

"It's almost like the tree sacrificed itself to save my baby," said Kim Brandywine.

"I've never heard of a tree doing something like this. This tree is a hero," said Howard Brandywine.

Jim Anderson, a neighbor of the Brandywines whose home was struck by the tree, took a more skeptical view: "A hero? Well, if a dead tree can be called a hero. Look, is somebody going to pay for my roof?"

In honor of saving baby Justin, the eucalyptus will be used to catapult the rabid elephant into the Pacific.

Haha yeah, I just recently read an article in SciAm that essentially says the same thing. Remember this headline from a few months ago, it was something to the effect of:

"Jack Russel Terrier saves kids from marauding pitbulls"

To which the SciAm columnist said an equally representative, and probably more truthful headline would have read:

"Jack Russel Terrier barks at approaching pitbulls who attack, kids flee in terror"

I don't doubt that dogs have an instinct to protect their pack, but I'm also quite critical of the 'Odd News' section of Reuters...it's basically a tabloid.

You're continuing in Jagwire's tradition of idiocy quite nicely.

Not sure how that's a difference. The hero dogs in each of the cases spared kids from pain by absorbing it themselves, whether through heartwarming canine bravery or mere happenstance.
