This recall has really opened my eyes to not only the ingredients in the dog food, which wasn't a big surprise, but where all these products are made and how they are made. I feed my dog Nutro Large Breed Lamb and Rice. It wasn't impacted by the recall, but other Nutro products were. I've decided to switch, but can't really pull the trigger on which food to switch to. Now with the recall of Natural Balance, a "premier" and "ultra-premium" food, I don't even know if any food is safe. I guess I have to buy a product from a company that has its own manufacturing facility.

My dog is allergic to chicken, so that narrows the choices down quite a bit. I've narrowed it down to California Natural Lamb and Rice and Innova EVO Red Meat (both made by Natura Pet Foods, which makes its own dry food). Anybody have any experience with those? Any other suggestions for me?

What do you feed your dog? Thoughts on the recall?

Damn, so many recalls. I feed my dog AttaBoy dry dog food, I don't know if it has chicken in it. Also left over steak when I BBQ some.

You might want to read this thread List of Best & worst dog foods from WDJ (Whole Dog Journal)

It's been awhile but most of the dog food suggestion still valid for today.
For the record, I fed mine Timberwolf Organics 'Wilderness elk dry' now and have tried Merrick Wilderness blend (Bison, venison & salmon), Merrick Grammy potpie (Chicken), Solid Gold Barking on the moon (Beef). I highly recommend those food.

Nothing but raw meaty bones for my dog now.

Had so many problems with so-called premium kibble. Used to feed Canidae and Innova.

I was pretty skeptical at first, but took the plunge two months ago. Absolutely amazed at the results.

We swapped our dog from Nutro Lamb and Rice to California Natural Lamb and Rice after the recall (about a month or so ago) - our dog is a 3 yr old Border Collie and she wolfs the new stuff down happily and has shown no ill effects from the diet change at all. She has however lost a little bit of weight on the new diet (1 or 2 lbs) which may mean the food is less filling than the Nutro, but she looks great on it and has plenty of energy. If she continues to lose weight I may up the amount slightly but she was a little overweight before anyway.

Same here when we butcher a pig or a beef. Damn dog won't even let me close to his pig bone. Wish I had a pic, never seen him so happy just like he won the lottery.

BTW
Ed, isn't going all meat expensive? How is it going for you?

I had actually started him on Timberwolf Wilderness Elk, but he doesn't seem to be a huge fan of it. Although it's called "Elk", the food is mainly salmon. The first ingredient, Elk, is water-inclusive. If you take that out, it would slide quite a bit down the list. Obviously, salmon is a high quality protein, but I am not sure my dog is a fish-eater. Also, Timberwolf is a bit too secretive for my liking as to who makes their food, where the ingredients come from, etc. Natura seems to be a lot more open, which is why I'm leaning towards them.

Pumpkin has been hooked on Solid Gold Barking at the Moon for quite a while now - didn't have to worry about the recall at all!

Nutro used to be on our list, and the recall doesn't affect us, but it's not going back on the list. We're using Royal Canin marketed especially for Dachshunds.

We mix it with a tiny tiny bit of Cesars for flavoring, and in the morning it's mixed with a tiny bit of cottage cheese. Gross, but Pixie also likes cat-poo..

LOL, yeah. Eating raw meat never made MoMo vicious or anything, but it was the only time I saw her get even the tiniest bit food possessive (which pretty much consists of grab meat and run away, LOL). But any behavior like that, and I just take it away, then give it back.

The only time MoMo barks is when it's feeding time, which is pretty funny too. I try not to let her, but it's just so cute, and it's the only time she barks.

I buy most of my meat in bulk now, mainly at Costco. Mostly chicken breasts and thighs with bone and skin on. (averages about $1-$2.20/lb) This way it's food for the whole family. I separate them all into individual portions and freeze what won't be eaten soon.

Cost comes out to anywhere from 2-8 times the cost of premium kibble. So, quite a bit more expensive, but since I have such a small dog, the difference in cost is very small. But if you factor in all the dental procedures and other future vet bills from unnecessary illnesses, raw feeding is an absolute bargain. Just on the dental health alone, we spend thousands of dollars on various cleanings, surgery for infections, tooth removeals over time for our past dog who was kibble fed. It was a horrible experience, and I did not want a repeat of that one. Wish I knew better back then.

i will be sure to look up raw feeding. my dog absolutely loves it whenever we cook out and he gets a little bit of prime rib heaven. when he's in our full possession again i will ask my dad about it. currently he eats some artemis brand kibble, and some alpo when he's a good boy. he's really small so i can't see raw feeding costing too much. it is worth it to protect his health though, kibble tastes pretty nasty to me (yes i tried it) and my dog deserves better! he is 100% purebred and we got him for free, which saved us a thousand or so dollars. beautiful dog, don't want any health problems with poor Soshin. or however you spell it. i cannot spell my dog's name, it is different on his kennel club thing and birth certificate.
