Ive seen flash based players for $25 on-line. They dont come with any built in memory, the user has to add a flash card of their choice in the slot.

Do they make a similar type of player, either portable or home... but with hard drives? Basically the shell, and th euser installs the drive of their choice.
I can get 30G hard laptop drives for free at work, and 10G's are a dime a dozen now.

Curious...

ive never seen that before. only the flash players like you mentioned. if there was something like that im sure it wouldnt look too good lol. are you planning on making your own DAP? maybe buy a broken HD player on ebay or something.
this may seem stupid but maybe you can put it in a different body too by moving the guts of the broken player into somethign else?

Im just curious really... Since some folks are into drive swapping their players anyways. they already have USB external hard drive kits for under $20... So I was just wondering of they make one with MP3 player capabilities. Wouldnt have to be the most portable thing, flash based players do that well enough. trans-portable I guess.

There are a bunch of these around. I know Vosonic produces a bunch of these without a hard drive although I can't find them on their website right now; I have seen them before, I just can't remember where. This is the least expensive that I have seen anywhere:

For the most part it really doesn't specifically serve as a portable mp3 player, however, it will store mp3 files and a variety of other files (and play mp3's). The use of most devices of this sort is usually for flash card off-loading from digicams and such. They are usually pretty big in size, but since you mentioned "home" use also, I'm supposing portability isn't on the top of your list. Hope this kinda matches your needs.

Damn, if something like that were made smaller (Don't need a flash card interface, for one thing), with more audio-centric functions, I'd be on it like stink on a turd. Make one to be a Karma/X5/XS200 clone that takes next generation 1.8" drives and you'd have my money before you can say "Now available".

I'll definitely be looking for stuff like this in the future...
