Does the Win iPOD work on 98 SE?

Blame Microshaft for all this. You see, Microsoft is no longer performing WHQL certification for any version of Windows 98 (that includes Windows 98SE) - and in order to be WHQL-certified, the devices can no longer claim to be compatible with any version of Windows other than Windows 2000/XP/Me.

That said, your brother can try using the iPod on his Windows 98SE-based machine. Just don't let him go running to Microsoft or Apple for product support if the iPod doesn't work properly in his system - they'll say that the only solution is to upgrade the OS to a newer version of Windows.

It will work with 98SE, but there is a catch. I got the 10gb ipod for Christmas and am listening to it right now and I have 98SE. The software that comes with the ipod only works with win 2000 or later, but there is a free software download, ephod, that works perfectly. Some people who have later windows versions throw away the provided software and use ephod because they like the way it works better.

Once you get around the software problem there is a patch that you have to download from windows so that fire wire will work. You have to be sure that you have 98SE and not just 98 because fire wire won't work on the latter.

There are several posts on this exact subject at www.ipodlounge.com. Just run a search and they will walk you through it step by step, even give you the links to the fire wire patch.

I hope this helps.
