There have been some interesting observations by some Head-Fiers that they think the production run of the GS-1000 sounds different than the prototype that John Grado brought to the 2006 National Meet. Do others who have heard both share this opinion?

This post is not intended to start any kind of flame war. Just a civil discussion comparing the prototype to the production run.

totally sounded different, but i chalked that up to the recabling/balanced/adapter combo done on the production model. what we really need to do is get a stock production model in the same room as the prototype - but remember that the prototype just has more hours on it than any other GS1000 (well, as long as Tom keeps em busy!) that said, the prototype still sounded just as good as it did at the National Meet. why oh why didn't i have the cash to fling on the spot like Bozebuttons did!

oh, and personally i really liked the recabled balanced GS1K on the headroom desktop amp - but you had to do two things. one, position the pads on the ears nicely. second, push em in a bit. that's what i had to do with my Cpadded HP2s as well - over time the velours compressed to where i like em, and i'm sure the Bagels will get there too.

monkeyman, thanks for starting this thread (the discussion was started within another thread that dealt with a different topic and it was suggested by a mod to start a separate thread to discuss this topic). the interesting thing is, ttbomk, every person who heard the prototype vs the stocker at the 3/3/07 ny meet thought there were significant differences between the cans sonically. and someone had stated that they'd asked grado about it and he'd denied that there were any changes made between the production and prototype cans. hmmm, how interesting.....

i'm not sure what you mean. people compared the two phones side by side in the same system, so differences heard presumably were because the phones were not identical.
