hi~

i wanna know if Sr80 really needs an amp not to sound murky..

i read some ppl's threads and they said it didn't need an amp.

they said it didn't even sound murky unamped.

Is this really true???

is Sr80 a huge step up from Sr60??

some ppl say it is.. some say they sound the same.

do you really need the comfy pads for sr60 or sr80?

do the comfy pads make any sound difference?

plz answer all those questions..

I've come around a bit on this issue after some more testing. SR-60's sound slightly better (and I believe are slightly more efficient) than the SR-80's without an amp. With an amp (or great headphone out) the 80's retake the lead. Do the 80's sound murky, etc.? I'm not sure I'd say that. I used the SR-80's without an amp for some time and thought they sounded great, but they do sound better with an amp... or with a strong headphone output. That latter part may make an amp non-necessary. As for pads, changing the pads of either to the Senn 414's makes a huge difference. Maybe as much as the difference between the two models. Are the 80's a huge step up from the 60's? Depends on your setup and what music you listen to.

I can only address one question: Do the SR80s require an amp?
I found it so. I used them with my Sharp MT770 portable Minidisc recorder which has much better output than any current Sony PCDP, and I still found it to be bland and boring to listen to, something no one says about any Grados when properly powered.
