i know you can get a p-s cable, but i'm wondering if an amp does anything for just a 4p. i can't tell much difference?

Good question!
You really need to train your ears and good source to spot the differences. Or crappy source and a good amp.
Once you start hearing it, you could spend all what's in your wallet... until you get broke or worse ... That is what all the people do here, I guess
