I like to think that speakers(and headphones) are like whiskey: buy/drink what sounds/tastes good to you.

That said, I'd imagine you'd have a hard time finding -that- many people that would agree that the 280's don't already sound good.

Besides, thats what the closed-back phones are for: to keep the nay-saying out and the music in.

I didn't care for the sound of them personally, but have no problem with people who do.

I got the same strangely negative impact some people do, i.e. they sounded way too bright and totally lacking on the low end. After reading those older threads speculating about possible QC issues, I'm still wondering...

I remember them sounding much worse (bright, not much low end) before burn-in. after about 40+ hours though, the low end came 'round.

At least, its there when the music requires it to be. Pretty comperable to the HD590's, to me, but I guess I just like the Senn sound.

I can only take your word for it -- I tried burning them in for at least 24 hours, and noticed no change at all. RMA'd those things in a hurry, they hurt my ears (and not because of the squeeze, either). Different strokes, I guess...

I've heard of some bad ones. I'm glad I got a decent pair though, guitar center is an ugly drive to the opposite side of town.

What tracks did you audition them with, if I may ask?

I tried them using several different sources... my turntable, my PC soundcard (Audiophile 24/96) and an old early 90's Magnavox boombox (which I used for burn-in) using a bunch of different kinds of music. Just couldn't get any low end even using an equalizer, and the highs were downright painful.

I suspect they probably were a bad pair, or I didn't burn them in long enough (except it's hard to believe burn-in could make that dramatic a difference, unless they're some sort of historic case).

I'm sure you've heard this story before... they have to be one of the most polarizing, "like them or hate them" headphones ever discussed on Head-Fi. Wish I knew someone that lived nearby with a fully burned in pair that they like the sound of.

there are a lot of people here who like the HD280s.....some don't...i remember reading somewhere that MacDEF and Jan Meier are not too fond of them....so don't worry, you're not alone

to me, the HD280s are alright for the price...but its bulkiness and the fit are starting to bother me....

as for wearing them outside, I've tried it a couple of times to see how much they isolate. They do pretty well on buses and trains, but airplanes are a different story...thankfully, i don't fly too much and hopefully won't have to.....

I got a pair of PX200's for portable use..I've also got MX400s....I still want Hd280 type isolation, though...sigh....looks like a never-ending quest....

& i thought that HD600/DT880 are the biggest things you can actually allow yourself to hang out with...
