Go to your local library, odds are they'll have a pretty good jazz selection. Just browse around and pick up a few albums from these artists, along with anything else that looks interesting:
Miles Davis
John Coltrane
Thelonious Monk
Charles Mingus
Herbie Hancock
Wayne Shorter
Weather Report
Mccoy Tyner
Keith Jarrett
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers
Max Roach
Eric Dolphy
Bill Evans
Dizzy Gillespie
Sonny Rollins
Stan Getz
Buddy Rich
Duke Ellington
Gene Krupa
Ornette Coleman
There are more that I can't think of right now, but anything by those guys is probably going to be good. Maybe I'll try categorizing them, but for now just get as many as you can and figure out what you like from there.
Good luck!
