Do you read reviews of components you already own?

When someone compares gear that I own ("Item A") to something I haven't heard ("Item B"), it gives me a rough idea of how Item B might sound. Gear that you own is a valuable reference point!

Depending on the component, yes, I do like to read reviews of stuff that I already have. At times, it helps me to pick up on some functionality that I'm not utilizing, but also it's nice just to see what others think of gear that I think highly of. It's obviously more important to do the bulk of your reading before buying, and of course to audition the item in question if at all possible.

With the Denon 5910 universal player and 5805 receiver, I'm finding it absolutely essential to read everything that I can about them because they are so blasted complicated! To learn all that they can do would probably take 3 weeks of full time effort in terms of reading and experimenting.

In general I always keep reading pretty much as much as I can about anything that interest me, for as long as it interests me. For example with my car, after I purchased it I kept reading about it to find out about possible issues, recalls, general reliability perception etc. Same with headphones, and with pretty much anything I have purchased, or I am interested in possibly purchasing.

Always. It gives me a good idea of the priorities & preferences of other members, and in turn, that gives me a lot more insight into their opinions of other gear.

I couldn't answer, 'cause the options didn't really fit. For me it would be a: Yes, 'cause I like to compare the reviews to my own impressions. In addition, it also helps me to assess the sonic preferences and rating systems of audio magazines/sites/reviewers.

Yes, absolutely. Mostly, I find that the reviewers have about the same impressions as I. But quite often, I find them too superficial and short, and sometimes, just plainly uninterested really: A lack of genuine interest. Perhaps due to an interference by the editor.

No no no, some times it's just words don't come easy, especially in a foreign language. If you judged my interest from how short my reviews are (basically a few comments/lines on my impressions) you would infer total lack of interest. Non sequitur!! no no no!!

Here's an example:

Review of Rita Hayworth: amazingly sensual and beautiful.
End of review.

Most people do read reviews "after" they buy to confirm to themselves they have made the right choice and they'll only home in on the good parts of a review.

You think? I read 'em, but mostly to see where the reviewer and I agree and disagree--on both the positives and the negatives. I think everything I own has both good and bad aspects and I feel like I learn something about the reviewer by seeing what they focus on and where we do and don't agree.
