Sometimes when talking to audiophiles I'm reminded of XKCD 915: Connoiseur. 
 
You can look it up yourself, not going to link because it is my first post.
 
Would you say that's an appropriate description?

I think so - an audiophile is simply a connoisseur in the specific area of audio. Every hobby is the same - there are always those that will take it to a nutty level.

Yep, any interest can be taken to the extreme. When it becomes entirely about the thing itself, and not about how said thing makes you happy, that's a sign that things have gone too far.
