I am looking for headphones around the $200 range.

But dont really want an amp.

To put it simply, no, you do not need an amp with these headphones. But if you want better sound, you should look into an amp. I am really only basing this on the Ohms on these cans too. There should be a review of them soon here on these forums by Gsferrari I believe...

I liked listening to the SA3k just through an iRiver, but note the iPod and iRiver need to be pumped up to basically max volume to get a decent listening volume with the SA3k. The SA5k is somewhat more efficient and only needs to be near max. Dunno about the 1k.
