do the brand of batteries make a difference?

Obviously there will be a difference in how long different batteries last, but do different brands of batteries provide different performance?

Obviously, a lot of people speak well of the Plainview 9v.

Is there a comparable type of battery in the AA/AAA version, that everyone seems to like.

I have used the Energizer 2300mAH with good results...

it's been said that they hold a higher voltage than comparable 9v storage batteries over a longer timer. that's important for most portable amps: they tend to distort under 8v...

Are there any other brands that are capable of doing the same?

Yes, the Maha powerex batteries come in 9.6V now too.
Thomas-distributing sells them and Maha's website sell them too.

A normal (alkaline or zinc) 9V batery contains 6 cells of each 1.5V. Wich makes 9V.
NiMh batteries have cells of each 1.2V. Making a 6 cell battery only 7.2V. To adjust to this most battery makers (not even all.) add one cell making it closer to 9V but it's still only 8.4V.
The plainviews and Mahas now make 8 cell batteries that are 9.6V. Ideal for amps who benefit from higher voltage!

Forgot.

About AA and AAA batteries. Yes there are brands that are better and worse. Some batteries say that they have a high capacity but in fact it's lower than they say. And there's more stuff that plays a role in battery quality. AFAIK voltage isn't an issue since AA batteries are single cells and all 1.2V.

I've been very happy with the Sanyo 2300 mah AA batteries.

Something called "the great battery shootout" is a site with test results. I'll try to find a link and edit it in later.

Tests are not very recent I see.

Sanyo 2300 mAH are my personal choice as well. they lasted well over the prescribed run time in my CD player and are probably the best battery for a camera that takes AA's
For porta amps, anything that goes 9.6V and over 150 mAH should be good.
The newer ones are closer to 250-260mAH
