Do Sensaphonics need amplification??

I am looking into the Sensaphonic headphones. I am thinking that since they are so efficient, that maybe an amp is not necessary to get the best out of them with portable listeing. In fact, the cost of the Sensaphonic may be offset by the fact that a seperate amp is not needed.

I have an iAudio X-5L on order, and this DAB is supposed to have a strong output.

What are the opinions of users?

My x2 sound great straight out of an ipod and H 140 but they sound significantly better with my SM 3 and even better with the microdac. I think this is probably true of most if not all phones.
