Proved that despite its huge size the CD3000 can be shoved down one's throat.

there are also some "upgrades" for those Sony cables, for Qualias and CD3000 (at least) if you want to recable the SA5000 contact Xanadu (Larry at headphile.com) he may have a solution for you....
If you decide to make some DIY cables for your Sonys, bear in mind that Sony coats their cables (and as far as i'm aware, their connections) with some kind of resin, so it will be essential to do a very good clean up job when desoldering, else you might get intermittent contact when re-soldering.
You might also want to call Drew at Moon Audio or HeadRoom. The former, because a few people are pleased with the Black Dragons for their Qualia (which are quite different from SA5k), and the latter because they, like Larry, aren't afraid to open up a good headphone for a cable replacement.
Good luck. As far as I can tell, you're the first person to get custom cables for the SA5k.
Sorry I wasn't in Tokyo while you were in town - I would have been happy to have you over for some SA5k/Qualia listening. And I am dying to hear your thoughts on the SA5k+Maestro.
My CD3K is modified with Moon Audio Silver Dragon cable and I'm very pleased with the result. I later add a headphile wooden earcups to further the performance. I highly recommended both of them.
