Do New iPods sound better than First Gen. ?

I have a 10 Gig, second generation iPod that is about 4 yrs. old.

Question: do the new ones (video) sound any better, or about the same ?

Errr first or second gen?

The last few generations have a more laid back signature than the first. If that's better or worse depends on your preferences and associated equipment. You certainly have the line-out option with the newer iPods.

Sorry for the noob question, but (I assume you're talking about the dock connector -> 3.5mm thing) how is that different than the 3.5mm jack on the top?

The line-out bypasses the internal headphone amplifier. This gives a cleaner signal for use with separate amplification.
